Many anime fans have the argument between two of the most volatile deuteragonists (second most important character in the story) in shonen history which are Katsuki Bakugo from My Hero Academia and Sasuke Uchiha from Naruto and Naruto Shippuden specifically.
In my time watching both of the series, I've had my main observations of Sasuke first when I was a small child who started watching anime. At first I thought he was the cool dude that gets all the girls.
Then sometime later on down the line, I started to watch My Hero Academia and get the chance to watch Bakugo at first glance. I would immediately get annoyed at how much he would scream at almost everyone without a hesitation or a second thought.
However, as an adult, maturing is realizing that Bakugo is a lot tamer than Sasuke. While his anger is more loud and performative, Sasuke Uchiha operates as a quiet, calculated delusion that makes him A LOT more unhinged.
At least Bakugo wants to win as a hero (AKA win to save); whereas Sasuke just want everything to burn to prove a point of his trauma and mindset of the world.
Which makes me have this hot take: Sasuke Uchiha is a lot more unhinged than Bakugo Katsuki.
Reason #1: Loud Angst vs Cold Sociopathy
For the first three seasons, Bakugo's aggression is instantly iconic in the series because it's outward and chaotic--he yells, sets off explosions, threatens to hurt or kill you (which is left ear right ear at a certain point), and acts like a menace to anyone standing in his path.
However, underneath the explosion hostility, Bakugo still functions within societal boundaries as a Japanese person; he stays and excels in school, follows Hero Public Safety Commission guidelines, and genuinely respects strength and victory.
One of the most iconic things I've remembered about Bakugo is despite bullying Izuku from the very first season, his middle school classmates want to go smoke some cigarettes. Bakugo said that they're idiots for doing something that reckless.
That made me have some respect for him since he have limits of not doing something that could ruin his chances for UA High.
Sasuke, on the other hand, exhibits a cold, detached sociopathy that escalates far beyond teenage angst. Sasuke didn't just throw tantrums; he cuts emotional ties without a second thought, turns his back on his closest comrades, and adopts the mindset of "everyone is collateral damage" mindset without batting an eye.
Sasuke was the same dude that would rather be a ronin to gain power to beat his older brother Itachi rather than stay with his closest comrades.
The student with the biggest potential out of all 12 of the characters ended up throwing it away because he wants more for a selfish and destructive reason.
At least when Bakugo wants to become stronger, he doesn't immediately throw his comrades underneath a bus.
Reason #2: Escalation of Violence and Betrayal
The true measure of how unhinged a character is lies in the action when given power or the ability to choose more power at a cost of your sanity.
Bakugo's worst offense was just being a unbearable bully to Izuku during middle school and some part of high school. Plus, just not being the best teammate in the beginning (team leader on season 5 was a decent option).
However, when Bakugo was kidnapped from the League of Villains, he did his best to tell Izuku to stay back and to not rescue him for damage control.
Sasuke, meanwhile, went from novice ronin to international terrorist.
After learning the truth about Itachi and why he had to slaughter the entire Uchiha clan, Sasuke didn't just target the officials responsible-- he declared his intention to kill and slaughter every man, woman, and child in Konoha.
He aligned himself with the Akatsuki (a terrorist group in the Naruto and Naruto Shippuden series), attempted to assassinate the Five Kage, sacrificed Karin (the person who repeatedly saved his life) just so he can get the best chance to kill Danzo, and almost killed Sakura as well before Naruto stepped in.
Bakugo at least learns how to not throw unnecessary punches to anything and anyone, and to make sure to not get anyone hurt. However, with Sasuke, unless you're helping him out with his terroristic attacks, he's most likely going to kill you without a hesitation.
Reason #3: Moral Compass and Motivation
At his core, Bakugo's motivations stem from an overbearing insecurity and a desire to be the absolute best hero, taking inspiration from All Might. Like Izuku, Bakugo tends to work a lot harder than most students and rise to the occasion as well.
Not the greatest when it comes to communication, but the potential to being a high-class Pro Hero is a huge possibility because of his talents and hard work.
He never genuinely considers switching sides from hero to villain, even when the League of Villains kidnaps and attempts to recruit him.
I still remember the answer to this day. "Go throw yourself into traffic" in front of all the villains.
Sasuke's moral compass, by contrast, is completely broke and constantly shifting.
The first life goal in the beginning in the Naruto series is to have revenge on a certain someone (AKA Itachi) and let his clan rise again. The clan rising again goal is not the bad part, it's the revenge itself was a red flag when we fully sat down and though about it.
He moves seamlessly from revenge against Itachi, to revenge against Konoha, to wanting a global revolution where he rules as a solitary, totalitarian dictator. It just gotten worse and worse until it took losing a part of his arm to Naruto to finally snap him out of it.
Yes you can make the argument that after the war he changed his ways; however, he has many opportunities to change his ways before the war even started. Even with Bakugo constantly bullying Izuku, as the story goes on and they both starts to mutually respects each other, Bakugo makes the ultimate decision to apologize for what he said and done in the past.
Sasuke "apologizes" at almost the very end, which is almost too little too late.
That level of erratic, god-complex ideological shifting proves Sasuke was operating far past the point of sanity.
Conclusion
While Bakugo's anger makes for great screaming compliations and meme material on all social media (YouTube has some that are better in my opinion), his trajectory remains that of just an arrogant yet talented kid that needs to learn some humility.
Which he technically did, the moment he lost to Izuku was the first day of a long journey to humility. To me, it was an investment worth paying off because while we can't escape his explosive emotions, at least the humility he learned from his time in UA helped balanced it out.
Sasuke Uchiha was a walking crisis whose internal darkness nearly brought down the entire ninja world.
Which proves my overall hot take: When you weigh in Bakugo's toxic pride against Sasuke's willingness to burn every bridge and village to the ground, there's no competition: Sasuke is by far the most unhinged of the two.
